Since 1885, the YMCA
has been an innovator and leader in aquatic program development
for the world. Today, it's more than just tradition
that keeps aquatics programs an important part of the YMCA,
it's the benefits people can obtain from participating in
these programs. The main purpose of YMCA aquatics
programs is to help meet the YMCA's
mission.
YMCA Swim Lesson Program
Purpose:
Fundamentals of Teaching YMCA Swim Lessons/YMCA of
the USA
The
general purpose of the YMCA Swim lesson program is to enhance
SAFETY, ENJOYMENT, and FUN. The program focuses on 5
components:
1. Personal
Safety - Through planned safety lessons and
general safety review during each class, the safety
componentprovides a foundation for the Y Swim Lesson
Program.
2. Personal
Growth - Each instructor exemplifies positive
value characteristics. The core values of all YMCA
programs are at the heart of Y Swim Lessons: Caring,
Respect, Honesty and Responsibility; are incorporated into
every lesson and teachable moment.
3. Stroke
Development - Specific skill development for each
of the swimming strokes including front crawl, back crawl,
breast and elementary back stroke, side stroke and butterfly
stroke.
4. Water Sports and
Games - Through synchronized swimming skills,
water polo/wet-ball, and other creative games, YSL focuses on
endurance, fitness, cooperation and fun
5. Rescue/Water Safety
Skills - Age-appropriate safety units are
presented at each level from infant through adult.
Reaching assists through demonstrations of rescue breathing are
shared with students.

YMCA Lifeguarding Course
A
certification class including CPR for the
Professional Rescuer, AED,
Oxygen Administration and First Aid. Must be 16
years old.

YMCA swim lessons are made up of
the following elements:
Series
swimming A focus on building
endurance. At each level, goals are set for each
swimmer, in all age groups
Peer Grouping Participants are
divided by age and skill level. See notes above
about appropriate age for each grouping
Use of whole pool At each level
(infant through adult) participants have access and
instruction in all areas of the pool
- including deep and shallow. This includes
SKIPS through Youth and Adult.
Use of Flotation devices
Instructional tools such as: barbells, kickboards,
noodles, and bubbles for
Pike/Eel, Parent-Child, and Polliwog
levels.
